The Haint Blue Period is a ceramic series that explores the complexities of human existence, and the choices individuals make throughout their lives. The term haint blue originates from African American communities in the American South, particularly the Gullah Geechee people. Historically, African Americans would paint the ceilings of front porches and exterior window shutters/frames in this specific shade of blue green to prevent the entry of haints (malevolent spirits) and hags (personified energies or living beings) into their homes.

This series delves into the eternal journey of human beings, examining the darkest depths of their humanity, the brightest aspects of their existence, and the gradients that lie between these extremes. The vessels within the series symbolise the women in these communities who navigate different spiritual paths to practice healing and protection rituals.

The series also touches upon the unspoken traditions within these communities, where women traditionally took care of the household while men financially provided for the family. However, both genders played a role in safeguarding the household from harm. During times of social and political strife between the government, other societal entities, and African American communities, the need for protection became paramount for these marginalised groups.
